Each signal in the risk report checks for a specific fraud pattern. Here's what they mean.
Country Mismatch
When the IP address, billing, and shipping countries don't match, it's one of the strongest fraud indicators. Legitimate mismatches exist (e.g. gifts), but combined with other signals, this is a major red flag.
Freight Forwarder
Freight forwarders receive packages and reship them internationally. Fraudsters use these to obscure the true delivery destination, making orders harder to trace after using stolen payment details.
New Email Domain
Email addresses on domains registered less than a year ago are frequently used in fraud. Scammers create disposable emails to avoid being linked to previous fraudulent activity.
High-Risk Region
Some countries have statistically higher rates of ecommerce fraud. An IP from one of these regions adds to the score — but it's never the only factor in a risk decision.
Free Email + High Value
Using a free email provider (Gmail, Hotmail) for an order over $300 is a mild signal. Many legitimate customers use free email, but combined with other flags, it increases the risk profile.
High Order Value

How can I tell if an online order is fake?
Common red flags include: the IP address country doesn't match the billing or shipping country, the email was created recently, the order is shipping to a freight forwarder, the billing and shipping addresses differ, and the customer is indifferent to shipping speed or cost. What is a freight forwarder address and why is it risky?
A freight forwarder is a service that receives packages and reshipping them, often internationally. Fraudsters use them to obscure the true delivery destination after using stolen card details. Freight forwarder ZIP codes are flagged as red flags in Shopify's built-in fraud analysis for the same reason.
Is a country mismatch always fraud?
No — a mismatch can be legitimate, for example someone buying a gift for a person in another country. However, it is a meaningful risk signal, especially when combined with other red flags like a new email domain or freight forwarder address. This tool scores it in context with all other signals.
What should I do if an order is flagged as high risk?

What is "IP country" and how do I find it?
